First struck more than 500 years ago for Henry VII, The Sovereign has always been thought of as the monarch’s coin. Henry VII intended the coin to make an impact; it was the largest gold coin in England and featured a portrait of the king in full regalia, seated upon his throne. Symbolising his majesty, power and influence, it gained the coin its reputation and its name.
Today, The Sovereign 2021 is instantly recognisable, struck in 22 carat gold and featuring its characteristic St George and the dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci. For 2021, the design has been updated with two small but extremely significant details. It features a celebratory crown ‘privy mark’ – which will appear for one year only – to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 95th birthday and the coin’s milled edge features a symbolic 95 mills.
